Tom Grubbs Annual Photo Contest
Contest
We at Camp Sionito believe that anyone who has ever taken pictures in their life has taken good pictures. One of the primary differences between professionals and non-professionals is how reliably they can get the good shot, because photography, like any art, is meant to capture a moment, convey a feeling, tell a story. It is erroneous to believe that in order for a photo to be effective or artistic it must have formal composition, ideal lighting, or most importantly, be taken by a professional. We are pleased that the photo contest is named for Tom Grubbs, who had been capturing moments on film and sharing photographs of Camp Sionito for approximately 40 years.
Camp Sionito presents many photo opportunities throughout a given camping season, and we want to see your photos and showcase your work among the friends of the campgrounds.
It doesn’t cost anything to enter, and you can enter as many photographs as you like!
Awards
The winner in each category will receive a one week (for one person) fully paid registration to a 2022 Camp Sionito summer youth camp or reunion for which that individual or that individual’s designee is eligible to attend.
Categories

Judging
All photos entered will be evaluated by the Contest Judge(s). The Contest Judge(s) will select the photos that strike him most for whatever reason. Identities of submitters will not be disclosed to the Contest Judge(s) until after judging is complete and winning photos are selected.
To Enter
Submission deadline is May 1, 2022. Photo entries may be delivered directly to the Camp Photographer during the 2021 summer camps or emailed at any time prior to the submission deadline to: nick@winocular.com.
Rules
- Photos must be from camps or activities conducted at Camp Sionito during 2021 or 2022.
- Limit on number of photographs entered per year is 5 per category; however, each entrant is only eligible for a single award in the contest.
- Submitter must be the sole author and owner of the copyright for all photos entered.
- Because the judging is an anonymous affair, an image cannot possess distinguishing marks (i.e. name, copyright).
- Send the highest quality image possible. No allowances will be made for poor-quality scans.
- The Contest Judge(s) will choose the winners. The Judge’s decision on all matters relating to the competition is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the competition’s judging and Camp Sionito.
- Copyright for all photos is retained by the submitter; however, in making a submission, all submitters grant a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to Camp Sionito. Camp Sionito reserves the right to post all entries on its website or gallery and include them in future marketing and advertising without notification or remuneration. Submissions will, however, receive our complete respect.
- Entries received after May 1, 2022 may be excluded from judging, but will be treated as an entry for all other purposes.
- Entries must include the submitter’s name and email address. You may specify the category of the entry or simply allow the Judge to make the determination for you. Additional information, such as photo title or a brief statement regarding your thoughts about the photo, when it was taken, and the equipment used to take it would be helpful.
- Only the contest Judge and his immediate family are excluded from the competition; otherwise, the competition is open to all individuals, including both amateurs and professionals.
- Note: Photos thought to be outside of the above criteria may be removed from consideration without the entrant being notified.
Timeline
- Submission deadline: May 1, 2022
- Results announced: May 31, 2022
- Winners will be contacted via email by May 31, 2022.
Photo Contest Tips
- The absolute, number one tip for entering is follow all the contest rules.
- Enter photographs that are technically well done. Look for sharp focus, good composition, excellent color and contrast, beautiful lighting, a pleasing background, and an interesting subject.
- Enter a variety of subjects in a category as opposed to multiple poses of the same individual subject. Enter early and often! Good luck, and thank you for your participation.
